The legendary freedom fighter was and is a national hero and figure of identification for the Swiss Confederation. He is said to have lived and worked around Lake Uri in around 1300.

The Rütli Oath was long regarded as the starting signal for the Swiss Confederation. It embodies our identity and the spirit of resistance against oppression.

The historical museum traces the alliance policy of the Old Confederates. It explains the significance of myths and legends for Switzerland's national identity. The centrepiece is the most famous Swiss document: the Federal Charter of 1291.

Sagähaft retells old legends from the canton of Uri. The traditional stories are retold and thus made easily accessible to children. Less well-known legends are deliberately chosen so that they are not lost. They are based on legends collected by the hospital priest Josef Müller (1870-1929).

Hans Steinegger has been interested in legends since 1978. He collects, researches and makes discoveries time and again. In the meantime, his private library has amassed over 800 books, writings and audio recordings on the subject of ‘legends’.
